A Healthy Beginning: Nutrition for the Mom-to-Be

Expectant moms know the adage: you’re eating for two now. Growing children need nutritional food to sustain their rapid growth, and that includes a child who may now be no bigger than your thumb. So does that mean you can scarf down two Big Macs now? You may now find yourself driven by pints of rocky road or bags of potato chips, but making healthy food choices is essential for your baby’s health and yours.

Healthy Pregnancy Musts

Health experts have concluded that there are nutrient musts every pregnant mother should include in her diet regularly. Growing babies—and mothers!—require the benefits provided by certain foods or supplements, now in slightly greater amounts:

  • Folic acid, or folate: An essential pregnancy nutrient found in leafy greens, fortified breads and cereals, and supplements.
  • Vitamin C: Found in strawberries, orange juice, and broccoli.
  • Vitamin D: Found in cooked fish, milk, and fortified orange juice.
  • Iron: Found in meat, lentils, beans, ad fortified breads and cereals.
  • Iodine: Found in iodized salt.

Pregnancy websites are excellent sources for detailed descriptions on necessary nutrients, their functions, and ways to incorporate them into your diet. Natal vitamins provide additional nutrition. Speak to your doctor for advice on getting the right amount of nutrients; some women may have different needs than generally recommended.

Your Baby’s Health and You

Many of the food choices you make will affect the health of your baby. It’s important to know that large amounts of vitamin A, soft cheese, raw or undercooked egg and poultry, and alcohol should be avoided during pregnancy. And don’t forget that exercise! A healthy you will help your baby too.

Using Technology to Bond with Grandparents

Many children move away from where they grew up as they become adults and start their own families. Unfortunately, it’s not often possible for parents to move closer to where their children end up living because of jobs and finances. So what can be done to help these grandparents develop close relationships with their grandchildren? The answer is technology.

Web Cams

One of the best ways to connect with grandchildren is by talking over the Internet using web cams. These devices allow you to see the person you’re talking to, which means a lot more than a voice over the phone. Grandchildren will be able to recognize what their grandparents look like so when they seem them next, they won’t be shy because they’ll be used to seeing them on the computer. Best of all, it’s cheap — there are programs that are free to use if you have Internet.

Emails

Another way to stay bonded through technology is with emails. Having your kids compose letters to their grandparents letting them know what happened that way is a great way to bond. Don’t forget to include digital pictures along with the email.

Social Media

Another great way to stay connected is with social media where you can post pictures and give little details of your life through status updates. Your parents will feel connected as you share what happened to your kids that day with a quick status update. If you have a smartphone, you can do this quickly, easily, and often.

Though you may live far apart, technology can help you feel more connected. Of course, visits will help as well!

Technologically Challenged?

I am W.A.B.  (Or maybe you want to say I am W.A.I.) “Without a Blackberry” or Without an I-Phone, I-Pad, or I-Whatever.

Most likely, I am deemed technology-challenged, and my lifestyle does not meet with today’s demands and requirements as far as what it takes to exist in this somewhat harrowing and competitive society.

By nature, my family and my husband’s family are not materialistic.  We try not to judge others or their actions.  Yet, I find myself mentally condemning people in the supermarket, and in busy department store lines shouting into their cellphones.  Who is it that really needs to know  that desperately what brand of product is being chosen…..Maybe I am envious that no one would really be that concerned about my daily choices or rituals.

What is DOPPLER WEATHER?!  What drives this so-called scientific technology?  Sometimes I want to scream: “Just go outside and look – you can see it is raining!”

It seems that in all we have done to get so far we may have stepped backward.  Whatever happened to the lowly COMMA? I don’t see it any more.  Nor do I ever observe its existence in my colleagues’ work. Perhaps generations and traditions and everyday etiquette have become obsolete, along with yesterday’s dusty technology.

The Conversation Necessity: Pregnancy

No words seem to be enough. No expressions seem worthy. Your life has changed—a pregnancy has been revealed; a child is now expected; and nothing beyond a grin seems eloquent enough for the discovery. Happiness has been found.

The transition of wife to mother is vital but complex. Your body will experience intense physical and emotional changes: a fluctuation of hormones, a redefinition of skin. And you (naturally) seek to prepare yourself for the days to come. The process of planning a pregnancy week by week demands more than an understanding of your body, however. It instead requires a dissection of your wishes for the future, as well as your partner’s.

Recognize what you desire for your child and what your spouse intends. Have a detailed conversation of all elements. Address the size of your current home, deciding if it can support a new arrival. Discuss all financial burdens that will occur once the baby is born (there will be many and a strict budget must be formed). Decide if you wish to remain at home or continue to work; money will often be the unavoidable variable of this. You simply may not be able to afford the time away from your cubicle, and, if you must return to your career, understand who will care for your child and the responsibility they must then wield. Consider names, potential schools, physicians and more. Examine every aspect thoroughly.

Too often communication is forgotten when a pregnancy is revealed. All focus is offered to laughter, to the joy of the moment. It is essential, however, to chart out all concerns before a baby arrives. This will spare you and your partner the horror of the unknown and coming home to confusion and far too many questions. Choose to express all opinions instead and reach a happy compromise.

Understanding How Getting a Divorce Works

The divorce process varies from state to state, so there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution.

Generally, though, child custody, financial distribution and issues concerning who stays in the family home and who leaves will most likely be the most pressing ones, so you should probably concentrate on these first. Because of this, it is important that you engage the services of a good divorce attorney as soon as possible, and be aware the decisions regarding these issues may be only temporary and subject to change as you continue through the divorce process.

Be prepared for these changes to be brought up, and be willing to negotiate wherever possible. If there is one area that you feel particularly strong about, such as the visitation or living arrangements for any children involved, then be willing to be more flexible in another area.

During the divorce process, avoid discussing the issues and terms if you can. If you simply must have someone to act as a “sounding board,” choose someone you can trust and you know will keep the information between the two of you. It’s no one’s business, really, and discussing terms and issues may cause feelings of resentment on the part of the other party. These negative feelings may spill over into the legal conferences, making it hard to reach mutual agreements.

If children are involved, try to keep their lives on as even a keel as possible, and do the same for yourself. Continue with your same schedule whenever you can, as this will provide a sense of security and control for you and your children.

Maintain as amenable a relationship with your estranged partner as possible, both in front of the children and in front of others. This can help you and your children manage the stress that inevitably comes from getting a divorce.

Reviving Your Computer

Kevin is a twelve-year-old who is a fairly computer literate child. He’s always poking around on the computer just ‘checking things out,’ or so he tells his parents. He can install programs. He can set up the desktop background, the theme for Windows, and select the screen resolution. He downloads ringtones for his mother’s cell phone. He downloads fun wallpaper designs that he sees on the Internet. He can add extensions and plug-ins to the browser on his family’s computer.

All drives his father crazy! Kevin’s father gets the computer all set up, then Kevin comes along and changes everything. Sometimes the things that Kevin does are okay. Sometimes he messes things up and it take his father hours to get the computer fixed and back in tip-top running condition. Lately, his father has noticed that the computer is running extremely slow.

One of the reasons Kevin’s family‘s computer is running slow is that the registry has become bloated. When software is installed and uninstalled, when documents are created, moved, and deleted, when browsing on the Internet, the registry saves information in snippets called ‘keys.’ There are also keys that are automatically in the registry when a computer is built. These keys tell the computer how to run and to function.

When software programs are uninstalled, they still leave pieces of the program in the registry. The only way to get them out is to go in and manually delete them or use a registry cleaning software. PC Tools Registry Software is very effective and efficient. When you use them, you will find that your computer starts faster, programs load quicker, and your computer isn’t as sluggish.

If you have a child like Kevin, instead of pulling your hair out because of some of the changes he makes on your computer, simply use a registry cleaning program to get it running smoothly again.

The Credit Battles of the Average American

These days credit is king and yet it’s so hard to come by. The United States has built a culture where so much is expensive and there are so many American’s who are living paycheck to paycheck, that the need for credit is high. So many American’s rely on their credit for their appliances, houses, cars and education. There are many that would be lost without it.

Up until a few years ago it was easy to get credit, but since the recession the average American is having trouble getting the credit they need. If the middle class American has a history of bad credit than they are going to struggle finding the money for the things they need.

Of course there are companies that are out on the market that are starting to cater to the men and women who have less than stellar credit. The small loan companies, like GreatPlainsLending, are on the rise because of their ability to cater to the individual with bad credit. The reason these companies are doing so well and helping so many people is because they have a business model that appeals to a wider audience base.

First, they aren’t hung up on a person’s credit. They are more concerned with a person’s income and their ability to bring in a consistent paycheck. The loan eligibility, and the amount given, relates directly to their pay scale and nothing else. They are also appealing to the average person because they are offering flexible payment options that allow the person borrowing to pay off the loan at a rate that is easy for them to manage. They are also being flexible on the interest rate that they are offering.

These days you need credit to survive in the world and these companies are allowing people to survive. It’s a win for the average American with bad credit.

Getting a Cheap Degree

Forget the connotation that ‘cheap’ suggests less quality. In this day and age of a drowning economy, ‘cheap’ is made of gold. And there’s no doubt that same definition now falls under the concept of education. As a nation, we’re now looking for a more cost-efficient way to obtain a degree. The Middle Class these days simply can’t handle the finances; it’s way too much money. But for sure the one way to stimulate the economy toward a speedy recovery is to promote the pursuit of education, which then strengthens the workforce considerably. More jobs, more income, better spending, better prosperity.

It starts with gifts and talents among budding students. Parents need to foster it. The bottom line is if your child has a gift, nourish it. Academics are important, too, but in the long run a comprehensive balance will provide a multitude of different scholarships–free money!–to provide for college. In addition, thanks to the Obama administration, more efficient Direct Student Loans from the government can help families with putting their kids through college, not to mention the many grants available nowadays. Thanks to the internet, you have one other amazing resource: online universities. With online degrees, not only do you sidestep insane costs for room and board and some parts of the cost for tuition, but you save time. Faster education means a faster rise toward a good economy. You can’t beat that.

Definitely recognize the potential. No one can make you do it, though. While the economy still struggles, people do have to recognize that the key to stimulating the economy starts with the family and education, which leads to better jobs. Yes, ‘cheap’ degrees are important. Don’t count them out! You never know that in a half a year you could be sending out a resume to a potential job that says you have a degree. That’s the key to better income.
